Then your head will start spinning at some point,&#8221; says Irene, assistant director and triage nurse by telephone at the TriageCenter (TC) at Dokterswacht Friesland. Those phone calls vary from an examination to a brain hemorrhage and a simple cold. She gives us an insight into her special work.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Highs and lows<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My job consists of highs and lows,&#8221; says Irene. &#8220;You have grateful people who can move you to tears, but also regularly distrust and even anger. I can understand that distrust: you call an unknown person, not your own trusted GP practice, and <strong>you put your worries in his or her hands<\/strong>.&#8221; She finds that people sometimes struggle to accept advice, especially if they are expecting a visit to the General Practitioner when it is not necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irene knows from experience that people sometimes exaggerate complaints to be &#8216;allowed&#8217; to go to the General Practitioner. An extra factor that does not make it easy for her work. &#8220;I recently spoke to a lady who was irritated and said that she could no longer stand on her leg. After further questioning, I assessed that she should be seen on the General Practitioner. Afterwards it turned out to be bursitis and she was able to stand on her leg; She &#8216;only&#8217; had a lot of pain with long-standing complaints. That is of course very annoying, but this was not an emergency&#8221;. As a result, the waiting times on the phone and at the General Practitioner can increase enormously, which is a problem for people who do need urgent care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Making a difference<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, there are plenty of times when Irene can really make a difference, such as when she saved a patient&#8217;s life by, after consulting with the GP at the post, expressing her &#8216;not right feeling&#8217; so that the patient was referred for further examination. &#8220;The patient&#8217;s daughter fell into my arms afterwards crying and said: <strong>&#8216;You saved my father&#8217;s life!&#8217;<\/strong> Moments like that make all the hard work more than worth it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irene shares another profound experience of a lady with vague abdominal complaints. &#8220;Something in me said it was serious, they had been put through by the control room, but the complaints were not clear. Based on gut feeling, I gave her an appointment at the General Practitioner. <strong>Later that evening I heard that a resuscitation was taking place there. I knew immediately: that&#8217;s my patient.&#8221;<\/strong> It turned out that she had an aneurysm. &#8220;I always carry the fact that it didn&#8217;t end well. Although I couldn&#8217;t have acted differently at that time since she was &#8216;ABCD-stable&#8217; (a way of checking whether someone is in danger of death) at the time of calling. But of course it remains a very sad ending, which you don&#8217;t sit in your cold clothes,&#8221; says Irene. It is clear that her work makes a big difference in people&#8217;s lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The cherries in the pie<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite that pressure, the sometimes unpleasant conversations and the complexity of her work, Irene beams when she talks about it. What she likes most about her job is giving advice and reassuring people. &#8220;I tell a worried parent of a child with a fever what the function of fever is and that the amount of it is usually not important.
